Mayoral change to be marked in church

Friday, 19th February 2010.

Haverhill Town Council is to appoint a chaplain and to have a civic service each year at the time of the mayoral changeover.

Members meeting this week were told the civic service idea had been suggested, where the main town civic and business leaders would be invited.

The outgoing mayor could thank those who had assisted during their year of office and the new mayor outline their plans for the forthcoming year.

It would be held at St Mary's Church and include all faiths, with appropriate readings and hymns, and be followed by a small tea party in the church, at an overall cost of £150.

No members dissented from the idea, but the appointment of a chaplain to provide spritual guidance and support to the council proved more divisive.

Labour group leader Cllr Maureen Byrne said: "We fully support the civic service, but are not too keen on a council chaplain. We have enough people locally who we can get spiritual guidance from if necessary."

The proposal was carried on a vote.
