Matthew Hancock MP ‘cleans for the Queen’
Monday, 7th March 2016.
Matthew Hancock MP joined a team of voluntary rubbish collectors in picking up litter in Newmarket and is encouraging residents to do the same in preparation for the Queen’s Birthday celebrations.
The team, led by local community activist Fiona Unwin, are a group of friends aptly named the Rubbish Friends, who meet up once a week to pick up litter in and around West Suffolk. They are familiar faces to many across the county, and have appeared in local and national media as well as being featured on the BBC’s One Show .
“Clean for The Queen” brings together all the anti-litter organisations from the UK and aims to get people involved in Britain’s largest litter pick. Community groups including parish councils, residents’ associations, Girl guides and brownies and Scout and Cub troops are encouraged to organise their own litter pick over the coming weeks.
Commenting, Matthew said:
“The Queen’s 90th birthday is a truly national event and provides a great chance for all of us to reflect on the years’ service her Majesty has given this country for over six decades. I was only too pleased to join Fiona Unwin and her Rubbish Friends.
“Thankfully West Suffolk is, by and large, a clean place but we need to work together to keep it that way. This is a great opportunity to make sure we keep our areas neat and tidy in time for HM The Queen’s official 90th birthday on 21 April and people can get involved whenever they like. It is the support and action people are taking, and not the dates, which are important. I really hope constituents will consider getting involved so together we can help mark this momentous occasion.”
