Marathon man Martin enjoys a win double
Thursday, 15th November 2001.
HAVERHIILL’S Martin Clark became European champion with a stunning display in the Iaido Championships (Japanese Swordsmanship) in Brussels.
Seventeen countries, including Russia and Jordan, gathered for what is a fast growing competition and the Japanese governing body sent three senior teachers (all 8th Dan) to oversee the judges for the contests — and also to assess the finals.
Martin, a 5th Dan teacher at the Ken-Yu-Kan Iaido Club based in Haverhill, went through a marathon 10 hour individual competition starting at 9am and was able to better the silver he won last year.
He collected the honours by defeating the French No 1 in the final.
On the following day, Martin, now in his third year as British Captain, led his side to victory in the team event, losing only one bout between them nil day. It was a happy finale for manager Vic Cook, 7th Dan, who is standing down as manager this year.
KenYu-Kan meet on Sundays at Haverhill Leisure Centre between Noon and 2pm.
