Man, 43 denies sexual abuse
Friday, 13th September 2002.
A Haverhill man took to the witness box to deny allegations of sexually abusing a young girl.
Steven Hawkins, of Feltwell Place, has been on trial for a week at Ipswich Crown Court, on four charges -- two of indecent assault and two of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency.
Hawkins went into the witness box to deny all the allegations involving the girl, now aged 13, when she was nine, 10 or 11 during a period between June 30, 1998 and March 31 last year.
In reply to questions by defence lawyer James Wilson, Hawkins, 43, said he was not sexually abused when he was younger, nor had he ever abused anyone, mentally or physically.
He told of his reaction to the allegations.
"Numb -- shock really. I didn't know what to think. It's horrendous, it's indescribable really when someone makes these allegations against you," Hawkins said.
Pandora Smith, the mother of Hawkins' daughter and his partner for 14 years, said she did not believe the allegations against Hawkins were true and told of her reaction when she heard of them. "I couldn't believe it. I was very shocked," she said.
The trial continues.
