Mammoth challenge ahead for cyclists

Thursday, 11th April 2002.

Two cycle-mad work colleagues at a Haverhill firm will be pedalling between 70 to 80 miles a day for two weeks when they take part in a sponsored bike ride from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Alun Houston, 26, and Tamsyn Stephenson, 23, are both laboratory analysts for Haverhill pharmaceutical firm Genzyme.

Tamsyn, who lives at Meadowsweet Close, Haverhill, was due to take part last year, but broke her wrist and had to pull out. Alan, who lives in Cambridge, decided to join her on this year’s event.

Now they are looking for sponsorship for their ride which will take place from May 25 to June 15, in aid of the National Asthma Campaign.

Tamsyn is an asthma sufferer and points out that around one in eight children in the UK today has asthma symptoms requiring treatment.

The ride is just over 1,000 miles and the pair are expecting to face 14 to 15-hour days in the saddle.

Alun said: “We are looking forward to it, but I think it is going to be quite hard.”

The pair would like to hear from anyone who might sponsor their effort, or provide essentials such as bike racks, camping gear, panniers, or even energy drinks for their mammoth journey. Anyone who can help should ring (01440) 716485 or e-mail tamsynstephenson@hotmaiI.com
