Majorettes among the medals
Thursday, 21st September 2000.
NEW Image Majorettes, who have been at the centre of a recent controversy in Haverhill, have rturned in triumph from the Czech Republic with bronze medals.
More than half the troupe's members have left since police launched an inquiry into its finances and it was revealed a convicted paedophile acted as a judge at its competition.
The remaining girls and their parents have stayed loyal to leaders Maureen and Jacqui Neale and travelled with them to represent Great Britain at an international dance festival in the Czech Republic.
The girls all received bronze medals and a glass trophy was presented to the troupe. They were one of 42 troupes competing from all around Europe as well as other British ones.
"We did a lot of travelling. It took four hours to get from the airport to the hotel. We had a really good weekend and it was the biggest competition we have ever done.
The girls worked really hard and were presented with medals, just like the Olympics. It was a very Emotional thing for us, Miss Neale said. Despite the controversy that has surrounded them, the troupe is determined to carry on and any new members who wish to join can ring (01440) 707407.
