Major tribute for Remembrance lined up this year
Monday, 18th October 2010.
The people of Haverhill will pay tribute to those who lost their lives in World War I at a series of events at Haverhill Arts Centre from Wednesday, October 27.
The first event is on that day at 7.30pm, when there will be a showing of East Anglian World War I films, organised by Haverhill and District Local History Group.
This will be followed by a Remembrance Festival on Friday, October 29 (10am – 5pm) and Saturday October 30 (10am – 4pm), and will close on Saturday, October 30, at 8pm with Haverhill Choral Society and St Mary’s Church Choir performing a tribute in words and music, In Flanders’ Fields.
Proceeds will be donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. For more information call Haverhill Arts Centre on 01440 714140.
The Remembrance Festival, which coincides with the 90th anniversary of the unveiling the Haverhill War Memorial, will host a variety of displays and short performances from local groups and schools such as Haverhill Art Group, flower displays from the Haverhill and District Flower Club and St Mary’s Church and Haverhill Girl Guides and Brownies.
Kedington Garden Society will present Dig for Victory and Gurteen’s factory will display memorabilia from their days of supplying soldiers’ uniforms.
Suffolk Record Office is encouraging people to bring along their old photos and war documents and Haverhill Local History Group will launch their new book Letters From The Front and also present the town mayor, Cllr Elaine McManus, with a copy of their research, Roll Of Honour, which details the personal history and how and when those named on the war memorial died.
Offering an insight into how people lived during the wars there will be a Home Front-themed exhibition with tasters of the recipes created by resourceful housewives from rationed goods, and volunteers from the Suffolk Branch of the Western Front Association will be in various WWI characters.
Suffolk Regiment Museum will be there to show off artefacts and exhibits in their Hands On collection and the Pearly King and Queen of Peckham will be mingling with the visitors.
One of the most important aspects of the festival is that every half hour six names will be read out from war memorial which will be followed by a short performance by such groups as Castle Manor and Samuel Ward colleges and the Haverhill U3A folk group.
