Local craftspeople to try out market stalls in special event
Monday, 25th June 2012.
A bid to promote Haverhill's market will be supported by some local people trying out their own products this coming weekend
Two local craftspeople will be among regular stallholders on Saturday, when Haverhill celebrates its market heritage.
Haverhill market, run by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, is taking part in the national campaign Love Your Local Market, which aims to promote the special qualities of local markets.
Two ‘pop-up’ stalls selling handbags and jewellery will help to promote the market. These local businesses have paid a nominal £10 to take a small pitch, to literally ‘test the market’ to see if their enterprises would benefit from a permanent presence.
Some of the biggest names in retailing started as market stalls – including Marks and Spencer, Tesco and Morrisons – because it is a flexible, low-cost way to build up a customer base. Markets are often ideal places to sell locally produced and sourced goods.
Haverhill cabinet member Cllr Anne Gower said: “Haverhill market adds vibrancy and colour to the town and is a special kind of retailing which encourages people to come and shop locally.
“I’m particularly pleased there will be a couple of new local businesses joining the regular stallholders for the day.”
