Local Council Tax Freeze Confirmed
Tuesday, 3rd March 2009.
A decision to freeze council tax payable to St Edmundsbury Borough Council has been confirmed at a meeting of the full Council.
A report to full Council talked about a number of elements coming together in the financial world to create a ‘perfect storm’. But because St Edmundsbury has been financially prudent over a number of years it is financially secure and therefore well placed to weather the storm. The elements include reduced income, increased demand for services and a fall in interest rates. In response the council has produced efficiency savings and generated new income, for example investments in the cattle market redevelopment in Bury St Edmunds and the Haverhill cinema are now generating rental returns.
Council Leader, John Griffiths, said,
“This is a well rounded budget which takes everything into account, including a Council Tax freeze which is aimed to benefit everyone in the borough in these hard-pressed times. St Edmundsbury too faces financial challenges, but the efficient and careful use of our resources means we are in a position to freeze council tax while continuing to provide the best possible services for our residents. I thank full Council for backing this move so overwhelmingly."
Only around one eighth of the Council Tax collected by St Edmundsbury Borough Council is spent by the council. The largest share, around three quarters, is collected for Suffolk County Council and the remaining eighth is for the Police. A Council Tax booklet sent to every household along with the Council Tax bill, gives details of who receives how much, and what it is spent on. It is also available to view on line at www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk and follow links to Council Tax.
The current rates of Council tax per annum, levied by St Edmundsbury Borough Council are:
Band A £114.66
Band B £133.77
Band C £152.88
Band D £171.99
Band E £210.21
Band F £248.43
Band G £286.65
Band H £343.98
