Local Business Event on Gearing Up for the Downturn
Wednesday, 17th December 2008.
There is an opportunity for St Edmundsbury businesses to pick up useful advice on weathering the credit crunch at ‘Gearing Up for the Downturn’, the annual business rate payers consultation meeting to be held at the Athenaeum in Bury St Edmunds at 6pm on Wednesday 7 January 2009.
Speakers from East of England Development Agency and Business Link will be there to pass on valuable information about the help available for businesses and to answer questions. St Edmundsbury Borough Council, which has organised the event, will make a presentation on business rates in the context of the Council’s budget for 2009/10 and invite discussion and feedback.
St Edmundsbury's Cabinet has already proposed a freeze on residential Council Tax next year and the council is pumping millions into the local economy to keep it vibrant. Recent funds have been targeted at schemes to boost local business such as:
• bursaries and training initiatives to help businesses increase skills levels;
• tourism, business and town centre marketing, including contributions to Christmas lights, signs and a New Business Competition;
• town centre management in Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill;
• grants to improve shop fronts; and
• updating and improving small business units.
• paying invoices from small businesses within 20 days, on request;
• extensive capital support to kick start projects and regeneration in rural and town areas;
St Edmundsbury Borough Council Leader, Cllr John Griffiths, said:
“We have always placed a high priority on boosting the local economy to promote prosperity in, and bring hundreds of new jobs to, our borough. While our economy currently remains relatively strong there are significant challenges and some signs of slowdown. Because we made sensible provisions during easier times we are now able to support those who need a little extra help to get through these more difficult times.”
