Lively Rovers step up their title bid
Thursday, 8th November 2001.
HAVERHILL kept up their challenge for the Jewson League Division one title with a 3-2 win over struggling March.
But it was hardly the cruise Rovers might have expected. March are rooted to the bottom of the table and came to Hamlet Croft still looking for their first win of the season.
They had conceded 61 goals before the start of the game and Paul Jenkin added to that tally in the 17th minute.
A cross from left wing back Neil Cogger found Jenkins and he finished off in style from close range to put Rovers ahead.
Jan Czarnecki’s March refused to lie down but they found themselves 2-0 adrift when Cogger netted from 15 yards.
March reduced the deficit before Marcus Hunt restored the home team’s two-goal cushion. Hunt belied his defensive position to delightfully place the ball with the outside of his left foot beyond the visitors’ keeper.
March hit back with a late consolation but couldn’t prevent Haverhill from moving into fifth spot just three points adrift of leaders Histon reserves.
CAPTION: On traget ... Haverhill's Neil Cogger.
