Leisure holiday bargains set to return
By Martin Chapman on Thursday, 6th June 2002.
Just days after returning to power cut price Leisure Centre admissions are to return for children in the summer holidays and senior citizens.
The policy, first introduced by Labour was axed by the Tories when they came to power in 1999 making huge cuts in the leisure services budget.
However at the first cabinet meeting for St Edmundsbury Borough Council under its new modernised structure the plan costing £25,000 was approved by members.
Half price children’s activities alongside cut price adult and family swim sessions will be provided on weekdays in the summer holidays. Senior citizens will receive will get half price swimming admission to the Leisure Centres, Monday to Friday throughout the summer holidays.
The news is likely to be welcomed by residents, as the Tories received complaints and adverse publicity when the policy was revoked three years ago.
Unveiling the announcement, Cllr Mark Ereira-Guyer, Cabinet member for Culture, said: “Price is often given as one of the main reasons for people not using leisure facilities. I hope that this offer will encourage lower income families and older people to enjoy healthy, active exercise during, and hopefully after the holiday period.”
The previous cut price admission policy had resulted in 40% increase by children and 20% additional usage by adults.
Under the new structure however, councillors have five days in which they may call-in decisions made by the cabinet for closer scrutiny. If this happens, there could be significant delays in implementing the decision.
