Lady golfers brave the weather
Monday, 17th January 2011.
After a prolonged spell of bad weather over the Christmas holiday, Haverhill’s lady golfers battled bravely through their competitions on Wednesday and Saturday January 5 and 8 respectively.
In very difficult conditions Mary Sail won both medal events convincingly. The full results for January 5 were: 1 Mary Sail 98-17-81; 2 Jacqueline Condon 103-19-84; 3 Doreen Darbey 113-28-85.
The full results for January 8 were: 1 Mary Sail 94-17-77; 2 Lyn Fish 106-25-81; 3 Jacqueline Condon 102-19-83.
The men’s midweek medal, played on January 12, saw a drastically reduced field of just ten competitors, due to the wet weather conditions. The course remained open, with just one of the greens on temporary.
Despite the heavy rain, Simon Price managed to score a magnificent nett 65, which was five shots clear of his nearest rival. As a result Simon has had his handicap reduced by two shots to 16.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Dennis Harkness 83-7-76. Division Two, 1 Simon Price 83-18-65; 2 Mark Carpenter 89-19-70; 3 Frank Robertson 90-18-72. Division Three, 1 J Morse 101-22-79.
Haverhill enjoyed some success at the meeting of the Winter Alliance, held at Bungay and Waveney Golf Club on Sunday, January 9.
The pairing of Andy Fish and Joe Davis were leading in the clubhouse with a score of 41pts, only to be relegated to third place once the last groups came in.
The 4BBB Stableford was won by Bob Holmes of Stoke-by-Nayland and Gil Mann of Brett Vale with 43pts. Steve Coonan and Russell Rayner, both from Waldringfield, were runners up with 42pts. Kevin Earp of Bury Golf Range was the winning professional with a three over par 72.
Haverhill juniors played their medal on Saturday, January 15. The difficult conditions were reflected in the scores, with Hayden Durrant just clinching victory on countback, scoring 102-27-75, from second place Lewis Whiting 84-9-75. Liam Merritt finished in third place with 87-10-77.
