Ladies dominate week at Haverhill Golf Club.

Haverhill lady golfers played an away match at The Gog Magogs on Friday, July 8.
The results were (Haverhill ladies first): Marian Mercer & Val Shipp lost 2&1 to Julie Stevenson & Chris McMullan, Doreen Darbey & Judy Farren lost 5&3 against Jenny Davies & Sue Thorpe, Chris Grainer & Jo Stokes lost 4&3 against Val Cuthbert & Sue Mortimer and Doreen Crosbee & Sheila Playle won 2&1 against Hilary Mundell & Vivien Raymond. The overall result was a win for The Gogs 3-1.
The Ladies Medal was played on Wednesday, July 6, and it was a successful round for Judy Farren, winning with a score of 108-34-74. In second place was Pat Kennedy 96-17-79 (lowest gross) and third place Doreen Darbey with 106-26-80.
The Saturday Medal was played on July 9 and Jacqueline Condon finished in first place with 95-17-78, in second place was Geraldine Wheatley with 101-22-79 and in third place Pat Kennedy with 99-17-82.
Haverhill’s lady captain, Marian Mercer, hosted her Lady Captain’s Day on Sunday, July 10. The men and junior boys' 18-hole competition comprised teams of three with the best two from three scores to count.
The winners were Richard Peck, John Stokes and David Peck with a score of 83pts. In second place were Gerry Scott, Scott Turner and Roger Turner with a score of 80pts and in third place were Del Thomas, Steve Bush and Gordon Price with 79pts.
Following on from the men’s competition was the Lady’s Medal Event. Winning the first major event of the year, The Lady Captain’s Cup, was Karen Wilby with a score of 87-16-71, just edging out lady vice-captain, Doreen Darbey with 98-26 -72 from third place Sally Price with 99-24-75.
Carol Day won the Stableford section with 24pts and the runner-up was Jo Stokes with 18pts. Winning the junior girls Stableford competition was Ailsa Patulo with 31pts and the runner-up was Nicole Pike with 28pts.
Jane Herrington, of the Haverhill ladies section, kindly donated premier tickets for Ascot Races for a raffle to raise funds for the lady captain’s chosen charity, EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) and Marian Mercer thanked everyone for their generous support and making the day a big success.
Paul Wilby, Haverhill’s head professional, organised a fund raiser golf day on July 7 for the club’s junior academy. Academy sessions are run throughout the year, every Saturday morning and during the summer months, every Wednesday evening.
Haverhill’s junior golfers are going from strength to strength and they have been successful at both club and county level.
On the day, the winning team was Trevor Broomfield, Ernie Lloyd, Jack Bligh and Richard Boyles with 84pts.
In second place were Mike Perrett, Liam Merritt, Mark Hilton and Steve Mills with 81pts and in third place Paul Wilby, Debbie Howlett, Roger Toone and Glyn Davies with 79pts. Nearest the pin was Richard Boyles and longest drive went to Jack Bligh.
Haverhill played in their final league match of the Curry Cup away at Five Lakes on Sunday, July 10.
The results of the morning matches were (Haverhill team first): Andy Fish and Dave Pipe halved their match against C Hamblion & D Hancock, Lee Chandler & Liam Merritt won 2&1 against T Cook & M Pitt, Dave Whiting & Lewis Whiting lost 5&4 against M Pook & Ian Cottee, Graham Ashcroft & Dave Mayers lost 2 down against W Savil & G Doherty, Paul Bartlett & Jack Bligh won 2 up against D Chignell & Nigel Popper, Trevor Broomfield & Pete McLennan lost 6&5 against A Garnett & Mike Gill.
The total for the morning was 3½-2½ in Five Lakes favour. The afternoon saw a valiant effort from the Haverhill team and the afternoon results of the singles matches were: Dave Whiting won 2&1 against T Cook, Liam Merritt lost 5&4 against M Pook, Lewis Whiting lost 4&3 against D Hancock, Dave Pipe lost 4&3 against Ian Cottee, Andy Fish won 1 up against M Pitt, L Chandler lost 1 down against C Hamblion, Trevor Broomfield lost 3&1 against Wayne Savil, Jack Bligh won 1 up against D Chignell, Dave Mayers lost 7&5 against A Garnett, P McLennan lost 5&4 against M Gill, Graham Ashcroft won 4&3 against N popper, Paul Bartlett won 2&1 against G Doherty.
Five Lakes seized the match overall 10½-7½. Haverhill is currently lying in second place in Group C and the team will have to wait to see if they qualify as the highest scoring runners-up to play in the semi-finals. The final is due to be hosted at Haverhill Golf Club on Saturday, September 24.
Haverhill Seniors had mixed success in their recent matches during June. On June 10 they halved their match away at Towerlands, on June 14 they hosted a very closely-fought match against Stoke by Nayland, where the visitors just pipped them 4½-3½.
On June 17 they were at home against Hintlesham where Haverhill notched up a comprehensive 7½-½ victory. Next they travelled to Fynn Valley on June 21, where Haverhill won 5-3, and finally at their away match against Bourn, they lost 6-2.
