Lack of space limits activities for town youngsters
Friday, 30th October 2009.
A survey has established there is only a potential club membership place available for fewer than one in ten youngsters in Haverhill.
The survey, part of work being carried out by Haverhill Partnership, looked at clubs, membership, fees and meeting places, and was run alomngside another which looked at available halls and meeting places.
It found there was a wide range of potential activities for young people in the town, but the capacity to increase the number of groups was constrained by lack of suitable meeting places, particularly in the evenings.
It also found most of the subscriptions paid by youngsters to clubs went towards venue hire.
If more young people came forward, rather than being a positive move, it would have a negative impact because demand would outstrip supply, a report to a recent Haverhill Town Council meeting said.
The council is continuing its research, to see if it can help in any way.
An indication that youngsters might be keen to take up activities 'if the price is right' was given by the fact that there are 3,350 under 16s registered for free swimming in Haverhill.
The issue of lack of venues has been raised at a time when the future of redundant schools is also being considered.
