Kirsty heads for new marathon challenge
Thursday, 21st October 2010.
Haverhill Leisure Centre receptionist Kirsty Millard is hoping to complete the Dublin Marathon in under five hours on Monday.
In April, Kirsty, 26, raised more than £2,400 for Get Kids Going, a national charity which gives disabled children and young people the opportunity of participating in sport, by completing the London Marathon.
She completed that challenge in five hours 44 minutes and aims to finish Dublin in under five hours which would be her personal best.
It’s a great achievement for Kirsty who only started running in April to lose weight after having her son Freddie.
Having never run before, she followed the Rosemary Conley running programme to gradually build up her stamina before entering the 5k Race for Life in Bury St Edmunds and the Cancer Research UK 10k with her husband Kevin.
To prepare for the marathon she has been doing RPM (spinning) classes once a week and swimming at Haverhill Leisure Centre. In addition, once a week Kirsty has been doing one short six-mile run and a long run at the weekend building up to 21 miles.
Kirsty, who lives in Recreation Road, said: “I would like to complete the marathon in under five hours, beating my time for the London Marathon earlier this year. I have also been listening to a hypnosis CD prepared by local hypnotherapist Peter Dougherty in Haverhill which aims to help boost my confidence.”
Dominic Greenwood, general manager of the Leisure Centre, said: “Kirsty continues to go from strength to strength with her running. It is an amazing achievement to go from never having run before to completing two marathons in a year. She is an inspiration.”
It is the 31st year of the Lifestyle Sports - Adidas Dublin Marathon, which is run through the historic Georgian streets of Dublin, Ireland's largest and capital city.
