Just champion!
Thursday, 9th September 1999.
MOUNTAIN bike rider Nick Ainsworth is celebrating becoming National Masters champion in his first full competitive season in the sport.
Ainsworth, 31, from Great Wratting, near Haverhill, led on points from the start in the RAV4 National Points Series Masters event.
He won gold at the fourth round of the event over a gruelling six-mile circuit in Hansterley Forest, County Durham.
He clinched the title at the final event at Ludlow, Shropshire, where he needed to finish no lower than 18th, but came in seventh, riding a steady race and taking no chances.
"To be national champion in my full year in the Masters is fantastic, and I can carry on in this class until I am 39. I shall be hoping to retain my title next year, I could not have wished for a better season really," said Ainsworth.
Ainsworth's success is tinged with a little disappointment, as he would have been going to the World Championships in Canada this week if the British Cycling Federation had not decided against taking Masters riders this year. He started the season aiming for the worlds, but could not afford to pay his own way and is hoping to go next year.
Ainsworth has also won the Eastern Region Mountain Bike Series this season, by a decisive two minutes, and his sponsors, Prestige Cellnet, have been very pleased with his results. Anyone else who can help him with sponsorship can ring (01440) 783435.
