Join our team says town's first woman firefighter
Thursday, 13th June 2002.
Tina Henderson, Haverhill's first female firefighter, is hoping to persuade other women and men to join her in taking up the job.
Full and part-time firefighters are needed at the moment across Suffolk and the county's fire service is trying to encourage more women, as well as people from ethnic minorities, to join up.
A recruitment and awareness evening is being held at Haverhill Fire Station in Ehringshausen Way on Wednesday, June 19, from 6.30-8.30pm.
Anyone who wants to find out more about the job is welcome to go along.
Tina said it was necessary to be over 18 to become a full-time firefighter or over 17 to be part-time, with a high standard of fitness essential for both.
She has a daughter of eight and a son of three and finds her job fits in well around the family.
"This is a chance to explain to any women who come down that it is not an unreachable job," she said.
"We are very interested in recruiting women and the hours are ideal for people with children in school."
Information packs about the job will be handed out at the recruitment evening, but anyone who cannot make it is welcome to call into the fire station during the daytime or ring (01440) 702123 for more details.
