Jewellers call for scrap gold in £20,000 charity quest

A HAVERHILL jewellers is giving hoarders a golden opportunity to clear out their jewellery boxes and help their local hospice at the same time.
Griffith Jones, in High Street, is renewing its call for donations of unwanted pieces of scrap gold, after an earlier appeal attracted 235 donations of items, which have raised an impressive £18,557.01 for St Nicholas Hospice in Bury St Edmunds.
But, while the store is pleased with the result so far, it is asking for a final push to help it to hit a £20,000 target.
Two years ago, Griffith Jones sent out an appeal for scrap gold and ever since, customers have been taking their unwanted items in to the store.
Partner Graham Shipp said he was delighted with how much had been raised so far, but encouraged people to continue hunting for items of scrap gold.
He said: “I have always supported the hospice through collection boxes and I thought this would be another good way to help the charity.
“We want this to carry on and raise even more money for the hospice. It doesn’t matter how small the item is, it can still help.
“We are really hopeful that we can hit our £20,000 target very soon, and urge people to bring in their scrap gold and help us.”
Mr Shipp hopes people will look in their old jewellery boxes and take any odd earrings, unwanted chains or broken clasps into the shop. They will then be valued, with all proceeds going to the hospice.
Abby Mayes, corporate fund-raiser for the hospice, said: “We would really like to thanks Griffith Jones for thinking of the hospice – we are thrilled with the success of this venture.
“We urge people to have a look for their scrap gold, as even small items could make a big difference and help Griffith Jones to hit that £20,000 target.”
