It’s a cup of joy for Emma
Thursday, 6th September 2001.
THE Haverhill golf week was a personal triumph for fifteen-year-old Emma Nicol whose handicap is rapidly tumbling down.
Partnering Steven Moye, Emma won the M. Beddoes Cup, which is a
mixed greensome stableford event, by two points from club captain Eric Kiddle who played with Shirley Andrews.
In third place with 41 points, one behind Eric and Shirley, were Wendy Wilderspin and Matt Isley.
Thursday was Junior Captain’s Day and the only girl in the field, Emma, skated off with the handicap prize after returning a nett 61 medal round. Chris Pannel was the runner-up on 63.
In the scratch event it was Craig Rose’s 76 which beat Edward Campbell on the same score. Suffolk under-14’s junior captain Ryan Wingate along with Ben Boltwood and Ben Ward, captured the Texas Scramble and Ryan also took the nearest the pin prize leaving Tom Campbell with the longest drive of the day.
The juniors travelled to Bury St Edmunds only to be defeated in a singles match but the boot was on the other foot when entertaining Newton Green who suffered the ignominy of an 8-0 defeat.
In a Seniors 4BBB match at Coupals Road against Towerlands, a 4-2 win was in favour of Haverhill.
The ladies’ Matchplay Shield game between Frances Smith and Pam Mills began with Pam holing out at the par three second, some 113 yards, with a seven wood.
But it was all to no avail as Frances went on to take the match and proceed into the next round.
