Inspector told there is no surplus of employment land around Haverhill
Tuesday, 4th February 2014.
The southern half of the borough of St Edmundsbury does not have an over-provision of employment land, officers told the inspector at the Vision 2031 planning inquiry today.
The public inquiry into the documents which will guide growth in St Edmundsbury reached the Haverhill area today, with a session around the issues in the rural south of the borough, which took place at Days Inn.
Two days on Haverhill issues tomorrow and Thursday will complete the evidence to the inspector Roger Clews concerning this part of the borough.
Most of the session was given over to consideration of potential development sites in Clare, but it began with the issue of the Karro site at Little Wratting.
Karro, which was a management buy-out of Vion in 2012, no longer operates the new abattoir beside the A143, and by written representation had urged the site allocation could be changed from employment to housing, citing a surplus of employment land in the borough.
But the borough planning officer Chris Rand said the company's current requirements had led them to move abattoir activities elsewhere, but the abattoir was still there should they require it again.
There was no surplus of employment land in the southern part of the borough, but only around Bury St Edmunds, he said.
The issue is topical as it has been a claim made by Carisbrooke in their attempt to get employment land in Bumpstead Road, Haverhill, re-allocated for 200 houses.
