Inspector suggests mentioning a rail-link to Cambridge makes sense
Wednesday, 5th February 2014.
An inspector told planners this morning it would 'make sense' to include a mention of the aspiration to link Haverhill and Cambridge by rail in the Vision 2031 document.
At the first session devoted to Haverhill issues of the public inquiry on Vision 2031, which will guide development in the town for the next 20 years, a resident had tabled a question as to why the railway renewal hopes were not mentioned.
Robert Green told the inquiry it was vital for Haverhill people to be able to travel to Cambridge more easily than at present because of congestion on the A1307, and even more so in the future if the 10,000 increase in population teh document envisages goes ahead.
Town clerk Will Austin spoke about the South Cambridgeshire Draft Transport Strategy, currently being prepared, and how it mentioned a possible rail-link as one way of providing a High Quality Passenger Transport system in the A1307 corridor.
The inspector, Roger Clews, said in the light of the work being done it seemed strange not to mention it in the Vision for Haverhill, and suggested to St Edmundsbury Borough Council planners it might be included.
Borough planning officer Chris Rand said it was not something the borough could achieve alone, but neither was it excluded by the Vision 2031 document.
The inspector will take away all views expressed at the inquiry and decide on the modifications, if any, which he wants included in the final version of the document.
Several other Haverhill issues are being debated during today and tomorrow, in the Haverhill part of the inquiry, being held in the Leisure Centre.
