Inactive handicap robs Nicky of midweek medal

The men’s midweek medal at Haverhill Golf Club was played on Wednesday, April 13, and there were some great scores returned.
Nicky Weller carded a nett 64, but he was unable to claim the prize, as his handicap was inactive. Therefore the overall winner was Geoff Dorkins with a nett 66.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Harvey Bavester 76-8-68; 2 Chris Vince 71-3-68 (lowest gross); 3 Andy Softley 82-12-70.
Division Two, 1 Lyndon Brown 84-16-68; 2 Nicky Weller 78-14i-64; 3 Stewart Johnstone 88-19-69.
Division Three, 1 Geoff Dorkins 87-21-66; 2 Dick Sisman 88-21-67; 3 Paul Mower 97-28-69.
The ladies match against Fornham was played at Haverhill on April 14 as a fourball better ball event.
The results were as follows (Haverhill team first): lady captain Marian Mercer & Judy Farren halved with Linda Gordon and Joy Wood, Doreen Darbey & Ann Thompson lost 2&1 to Pam Madams & Jean Elliot, Sally Price & Christine Grainger won 4&3 against Trish Wilding and Maureen Pettit and Sue Carr & Gerry Wheatley won 4&3 against Margaret Shea & Carol Nickleson. The Haverhill ladies won 2½-1½ .
Also on April 14, Haverhill hosted the Suffolk v Essex Juniors match for under 18s and under 16s and the results were as follows:
Under 18's Foursomes (Suffolk Team first): Chris Vince and Mark Fosker halved with Josh Tobin and Allister Plumb, Sam Jaggard and Guy Mummery halved with Mason Papple and Devon Dunmore, James Markham and Calvin Sherwood lost to Tom Barber and Ben David 3&2.
Singles: Vince beat Tobin 1 up, Sherwood lost to Plumb 4&3, Fosker beat Dunmore 6&4, Mummery lost to Papple 7&6, Markham lost to David 6&5, Jaggard lost to Barker 2&1. Match result Suffolk 3 Essex 6.
Under 16's (Suffolk Team first): Last and Keeble halved, Mann beat Sargent 2 up, Waring lost to Withington 2 down, Staff lost to Cambden 2&1, Hambling beat Mason 2 up, Johnson lost to Rayner 2&1. Match result Suffolk 2½-Essex 3½.
On Sunday, April 17, Haverhill were drawn away against Gosfield in their next league match of the Curry Cup. Unfortunately the result did not go Haverhill’s way as they struggled on the greens and lost 12-6. Haverhill’s next Curry Cup match is at home against Epping at the end of April.
Abbotsley visited Haverhill on Saturday, April 16, for a friendly match, playing for the coveted ‘Bone of Contention Cup’! Fortunately the tables were turned after their previous meeting away at Abbotsley, and Haverhill won 5-3.
The following day Haverhill hosted a mixed match against Seckford, with seven pairs taking part from each club. The result was a convincing win for Haverhill 5½-1½.
Finally, the Haverhill ladies won their friendly match away at Flempton 2-1 on Monday, April 18. Unfortunately, one of the matches had to be abandoned due to injury.
Haverhill Juniors had a very close match away at Bury St Edmunds in the first round of the Junior Team Handicap Cup on April 18, but were the eventual winners 3½-2½.
The full results were (Haverhill team first): Richard Boyles halved his match with Jack Nicholson, Liam Merritt lost his match with Daniel Smailes, Lewis Whiting won his match against Daniel Warren, Michael Perrett won his match against Daniel Palfrey, Stephen Boyles won his match against Sam Nicholson and James Higham halved his match against Caylum McFie.
