Ice Rink Launch For Festive Season
By Jo Deeks on Saturday, 12th November 2005.
Ice skating on the Market Square is just one in a series of special events to get Haverhill's Christmas celebrations off to a flying start.
Shoppers in Haverhill can look forward to a range of weekend activities on Saturday November 26th and Sunday 27th.
Town Mayor Tim Marks said the ice rink was a first for the town and he hoped it would help to attract shoppers.
"The idea is to try and build up a whole festive atmosphere in the town around the market place for Christmas." he said.
"I think it will create a marvellous atmosphere in the town and I hope people will use it and enjoy it."
Haverhill Town Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council are working together on a programme aimed at encouraging residents to get into the festive spirit.
The fun starts on the Saturday, when the ice rink will be set up on the Market square.
Provided by Bedfordshire-based firm 'Fun Ice', it will open from noon to 6.30pm.
A Christmas craft fair will also be staged in the Burton Centre, next to the library on both the Saturday and Sunday.
Around 20 traders will be selling a wide range of festive gifts for all the family, including hand made cards, jewellery, wooden items, needlecraft, children's toys, hand painted decorations and mirrors.
Admission to the craft fair is free and it runs from 10am to 4pm.
To finish off their Saturday shopping the crowds can join a traditional carol service in the square at 6.30pm, organised by Haverhill Town Council and St. Nicholas Hospice.
The grand finale follows when the mayor flicks the switch to light up the town's Christmas lights display, by Councillor Marks. The carols will be led by children from Burton End Primary School.
There are still stalls available at the craft fair. Anyone wanting to book a place or needing more information on any of the events should call Nick Keeble, the town council's Arts and Leisure Manager, on 01440 710174, or Geoff Hinkins, Haverhill Projects Officer for St Edmundsbury Borough Council on 01440 765150.
Geoff Hinkins, Haverhill Projects Officer, said: "This promises to be a great weekend for Haverhill and we hope that it will prove to be a big draw for Christmas shoppers. Haverhill has a lot to offer all-year-round and we hope that these events will encourage more people to come and use the town centre."
