Hundreds Join Parade As Town Honours Fallen
By Jo Deeks on Sunday, 19th November 2006.
Haverhill's Remembrance Day parade was bigger than ever this year with an estimated 400 people taking part in the march down the High Street to the war memorial in Withersfield Road for the wreath laying ceremony.
Town mayor Councillor Ann Thomas took the salute outside the council offices, followed by a service at St Mary's parish church, led by Ray Gibbs, reader at the church.
Councillor Frank Warby, Mayor of St Edmundsbury, read the lesson, with parts of the service conducted by Father Michael Teader, of St Felix Roman Catholic Church, and Capt Stuart Ashman, of Haverhill Salvation Army, as well as Councillor Phillip French, president of Haverhill and Thurlow branch of the Royal British Legion.
Afterwards there was a reception for veterans and invited guests at the library.
"It was absolutely brilliant, everything went off exactly as planned. The parade gets larger every year and we are really pleased with the support we get from the town," Brian Thomas, secretary of Haverhill RBL said.
