Humour is the key to winning card design
Wednesday, 17th December 2014.
The winning entry in the Days Inn Haverhill Christmas card competition impressed the judges with the precision and detail of their drawing and their use of humour.
The Design A Christmas Card competition was open to year five and six pupils in the town’s primary schools. The children were asked to design a card that conveyed what Christmas meant to them.
Clements CP, St Felix, Place Farm and Westfield primary schools all took part in the competition and 112 entries were received in total.
The cards were judged by a panel comprising Donna Revell, general manager of the hotel; Helen Chaplin, site manager of Haverhill Research Park and local artist, photographer and children’s author Jon Adkin.
Helen said: “The standard of entries was very high and choosing a winning design was more difficult than I initially expected. Seeing all the cards laid on the table there were some that really stood out, these became our shortlist.
"After much deliberation the judges were unanimous in their decision on the winner. I love anything to do with arts and crafts and have often created my own greeting cards so was really happy to be involved.”
The winning card was designed by Luke Hannigan, a year five pupil at Clements Primary School. Luke’s design shows Father Christmas stuck in the chimney and asking for mince pies.
The simplicity and humour of the card connected with the judges, who felt it encapsulated the innocence of Christmas through a child’s eyes.
Jon, who is currently publishing his series of children’s books The Adventures Of Carla Bear, said: “There were some excellent designs and a real mix of themes ranging from the traditional nativity to a snowman. You could tell the cards submitted were clearly the children’s own work, which was lovely to see.”
This week Luke and his classmates from Falcons were invited to a Christmas Party in the function room at the Days Inn as part of his prize. Clements Primary also received 200 of the printed cards to distribute to their pupils.
The final word goes to the hotel’s general manager Donna, who said: “We were delighted with the response to our competition. There were so many fantastic designs it was tough choosing a winner.
"We always get dressed up in festive outfits for our Christmas marketing campaign as we like to do something a little different. We have also been known to make videos of the team singing Christmas songs, which you can find on our website!
"Our team has a real sense of fun so the humour in Luke’s card really did appeal. The cards have been printed by Red Side Up and now we cannot wait to get them written out and posted to our customers. We are also looking forward to hosting the party for Luke and his class later this month.”
