Huge site on bypass ready for go-ahead
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 3rd February 2000.
A MASSIVE development site alongside Haverhill bypass is being recommended for approval by planning officials.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Planning Committee is due to consider the outline application by Wrenbridge Limited and 3i Commercial Property on Thursday.
The developers plan to use the 37-acre site, which is divided by Bumpstead Road, for industrial and warehouse premises, along with a petrol station and hotel.
The proposals look set for conditional approval, with the developers asked to provide car parking and contribute to a town centre study, town centre improvements, off-site cycleway provision, the A1017 traffic calming scheme for Sturmer, public transport provision and green travel plans.
They would also have to meet conditions relating to landscaping, noise levels and protecting trees and wildlife.
Sturmer Parish Council raised concerns over increased traffic through the village and said the developers should make a substantial contribution towards the cost of a bypass.
Parish councillors were also concerned about pollution and health risks.
Haverhill Town Council supported the industrial and hotel development, but opposed the petrol filling station.
St Edmundsbury planning officer Chris Rand said the parish council's concerns were seriously considered, but it was decided that traffic generated by the proposal would not justify a bypass.
Mr Rand said it was also felt the petrol station was needed as otherwise there would be more traffic in residential areas seeking fuel.
