Honours reward long service to community
Friday, 4th January 2013.
The New Year’s Honours List contained the names of two Haverhill people this year, musician and conductor Les Ager and housing tenants representative Muriel Healey.
Both have been awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community.
Mr Ager, who is 74, is a town and borough councillor, and a former mayor and deputy mayor of Haverhill, but his award is for services to music locally.
A former Army bandsman, he was conductor of Haverhill Silver Band for 30 years and musical director of Haverhill Operatic Society for 48 shows between 1970 and 2007.
Carols For All, the town’s major Christmas concert for more than 35 years, was largely created by him and he had taken part in all of them until the one just gone.
92-year-old great grandmother Mrs Healey became involved with Havebury Housing Partnership when it was set up ten years ago, as a tenants representative and is one of its longest-serving board members.
