Hong Kong trade event returns to West Suffolk
Friday, 29th April 2016.
Businesses from across West Suffolk are invited to attend a free seminar in Bury St Edmunds next Thursday 12 May 2016, aimed to boost trading with Hong Kong and Asia.
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is returning to hold the second of its Think Asia, Think Hong Kong seminars, in partnership with West Suffolk councils and the China-Britain Business Council.
The seminar takes place between 9am and 1pm at The Athenaeum in Bury St Edmunds and includes a networking lunch.
Guest speakers will include Chris Cotton, director of the China-Britain Business Council and David Marsden, UK director of the HKTDC.
Mr Marsden said: “"The interest shown by Suffolk companies to business opportunities in Hong Kong and China is very encouraging. We’re now looking to build on the momentum; this seminar will allow us to explore how we take things forward. It’s also a chance for delegates to network and gain insights into how to do business in Asia.”
The trade link has been spearheaded by Mayor of St Edmundsbury Cllr Patrick Chung, who is originally from Hong Kong.
Cllr Chung said: “We know that the businesses that attended last year found the event really useful. This is about helping them make the connections, and gain the insight and advice, that will enable them to forge international trade links with Hong Kong and other parts of Asia.”
Cllr John Griffiths, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council said: “The HKTDC recognises that there are huge opportunities to work with existing companies here in West Suffolk, while the expansion of the Suffolk Business Park near Bury St Edmunds and the development of the Haverhill Research Park – both of which sit in Enterprise Zones - will ensure that that invaluable relationship can further develop as we attract new businesses to the area.”
Cllr James Waters, Leader of Forest Heath District Council said: “The growth and survival of our local businesses go hand in hand. Seizing opportunities like this can help a company secure its future, create new jobs, and boost public spending which supports many sectors of our local economy. Through this seminar, we are making the introductions to experts who can advise West Suffolk businesses on how they can open the door to successful trading with Hong Kong.”
Both Local Enterprise Partnerships are supporting the event.
Neil Darwin, Chief Executive of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP, said: “Exporting provides businesses with a significant opportunity for growth. Whether it’s goods, services, or both, international trade opens up a world of new clients and new opportunities. That is why we are pleased to work with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and West Suffolk to highlight these opportunities to local businesses.”
Chris Starkie, Managing Director of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “More and more businesses in Suffolk and Norfolk are looking to expand into new markets as our economy continues to grow. This event offers a unique chance to learn more about doing business in Asia, make new contacts, and find new opportunities to achieve success on a world stage – all of which can only be good news for West Suffolk and our wider economy.”
Spaces at the seminar are limited and anyone interested in attending should contact the HKTDC on 020 7616 9500 or email tdcukseminar@hktdc.org
