History group celebrates provisional museum accreditation
Tuesday, 16th July 2013.
Haverhill has taken another little step on the long road to getting a town museum.
Volunteers at Haverhill and District Local History Group are celebrating their achievement after being awarded provisional museum accreditation.
The group received their certificate at the general meeting of the Association for Suffolk Museums at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village.
Accreditation applies nationally-recognised standards to the way museums care for their collections and run their services, and operates at different levels right up to institutions like the British Museum.
The award comes at an exciting time for the history group, who are planning a new exhibition for the summer. Hail! Haverhill, Hail! is a celebration of Haverhill past and present, exploring not only the history of this industrious market town but asking its modern day residents to share their own stories and thoughts about Haverhill.
The exhibition will take place in the Arts Centre on August 23 and 24 from 10am-4pm and will be free to enter.
Archivist Tony Turner said: "For a volunteer-run organisation such as ours to be awarded accreditation is a great achievement and we are looking forward to celebrating it with this exciting exhibition."
The work of the history group is entirely dependent on the contributions of volunteers, and the group is always looking for new members to help run this important local service.
If you have an interest in local history and would like to find out more about volunteering please contact the History Group on 01440714962 or email haverhillhistuk@gmail.com.
Alternatively, you can visit the history group in the Arts Centre on Thursdays 2-4pm, Fridays 2-4pm and Saturdays 10.30am-3.30pm. You can find out more about Haverhill & District Local History Group at http://haverhilllhg.onesuffolk.net/
