Help us stop attacks - plea
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 21st June 2001.
A HAVERHILL police chief is appealing to the public for help after a spate of attacks on women and children in the town.
Insp Mike Bacon particularly wants to hear from a woman who left an anonymous note at the Police Station on Monday afternoon saying she had been attacked on Saturday night.
This would have been just a few hours after a nine-year-old girl was grabbed by a man wearing a balaclava as she played at Arundel Walk on Saturday afternoon.
Police also have a report of a man trying to entice two 15-year-old girls into his car in Queen Street, Haverhill, on Monday, June 11.
Insp Bacon said he was very concerned about a child of nine being targeted and urged anyone with information about that, or any similar, incident to come forward.
In the anonymous note brought into the police station on Monday, the woman said she had been attacked from behind near the Black Horse pub as she walked across the road towards the Recreation Ground at 11.45pm on Saturday. The man pushed her to the ground and banged her head on the ground twice before she managed to fight him off.
She described him as white, about 6ft or more, with dark hair and a broad build. The victim suffered a few scratches but did not want to be identified.
Insp Bacon appealed to the woman to come forward and speak to the police again in complete confidence.
"She may have more information that could help us that she may not even be aware of, so that we can decide if these incidents are linked.
"It is unusual and I am concerned about these three incidents in the spate of only a couple of weeks.
"I do not want to create panic or unnecessary fear, as, luckily, violent offences are rare, but we do need to raise the public's awareness so that they can help us with information and bear in mind personal safety," Insp Bacon said.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incidents or has any other information should contact Suffolk Police on (01284) 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
