Health workers raise charity cash

Thursday, 13th September 2001.

A GROUP from Haverhill, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds rubbed shoulders with record breaker Paula Radcliffe when they took part in a five-kilometre charity fun run in Hyde Park.

The 18 women - staff of the West Suffolk Border Primary Care Group (PCG) and their families — took part in the Flora Light Challenge Fun Run for Women, in aid of diabetes research in the UK.

Haverhill health visitor Ros Causey organised the team, which included West Suffolk Borders chief executive Ana Selby and her daughter Kate, 14. It is hoped that sponsorship will total several hundred pounds.

The PCG works closely with West Suffolk Hospital to introduce regular eye screening for all diabetics — diabetes is the most common cause of blindness
in the UK.

A retinal camera is based at the hospital in Bury St Edmunds and another is to be used in a mobile unit to reach rural areas.

Mrs Causey said: “A lot of us spend our time telling other people to exercise and get fit, so we thought we should practice what we preach. Some walked and some ran. We all got fitter and had fun.”
