Haverhill youths to benefit from grants
Wednesday, 27th November 2002.
GRANTS totalling more than £25,000 have been awarded to groups working for children and young people in the Haverhill area -- and more cash is still available.
Charity Suffolk A.C.R.E. has awarded the first of its Local Network Fund grants for disadvantaged children and young people aged up to 19.
A total of £84,331 has been awarded across Suffolk so far and another £118,000 is still available to be distributed this financial year, with the closing date for the next round of applications on Saturday.
Included in the first grants is £6,675 for the Haverhill Advocacy and Mentoring Service (H.A.M.S.), £6,372 for the Haverhill Volunteer Centre, £7,000 for the Wednesday for Women group and £4,980 for Kedington Youth Group.
The cash received by H.A.M.S. will be used to train Year 8 students to be mentors for new Year 5 students in middle schools in the deprived wards of Haverhill.
The Volunteer Centre cash will be used to develop its befriending scheme for disadvantaged families. Kedington Youth Group will use its cash to develop a youth club.
Local community groups of young people or parents can apply for grants of between £250 and £7,000.
They are available to charitable or non-profit making groups and organisations across Suffolk.
