Haverhill starting to show up on Government radar
Monday, 5th November 2012.
A Government minister was in Haverhill on Friday, and cabinet minister will be here tomorrow.
The Rt Hon Don Foster MP, parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, visited Haverhill on Friday to meet with ONE Haverhill and find out about how plans are progressing for a community budget.
Haverhill has been chosen by the Government as one of just 12 areas in the UK to pilot a new way of giving local communities more say in the way budgets are spent.
Community budgeting provides a real opportunity for people in Haverhill to directly influence how and where money is spent in the town.
All organisations will still hold their funding and their responsibilities, but the board will work on bringing organisations round the table to ensure that the money is spent locally to provide the services local people value the most.
Mr Foster met ONE Haverhill vice-chairman Sarah Howard and other representatives to hear how the project has progressed in the town.
Sarah said: “I gave a presentation to Don Foster last week at the DCLG on our work and he attended our weekly core group meeting to explore in more detail what we are doing.
"This is one more example of how seriously the government is taking the Communities Budget Pilots and that we, in Haverhill, are doing some cutting edge work.”
Mr Foster's boss, the Rt Hon Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, is treading fast on his minister's heels with a visit to the town tomorrow, to officially launch Haverhill Research Park.
