Haverhill school to train teachers of the future

Wednesday, 7th April 2004.

A Haverhill school has been given training status by the Departement of Education and Skills, this week.

Samuel Ward Upper School in Haverhill, along with King Edward VI Upper School in Bury St Edmunds, have both been given the status, which means they will increase provision for training and supporting teacher development in their local area.

This will include work with students on initial teaching training courses, such as the secondary School Centred Initial Teacher Training programme and graduate teacher scheme that are run in Suffolk to help the county ‘grow its own’ teachers.

There will also be outreach work carried out in schools by Advanced Skills Teachers from both these schools, plus classroom based teaching practice, and training sessions for people to learn new techniques and theories to improve their teaching practice.

Tony Lewis, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for children and young people, said: “I am very pleased that these schools have been recognised in this way, which will help us improve the quality of teaching in Suffolk schools even further. The schools will be key in identifying and meeting training needs locally, and I look forward to seeing the benefits this brings to teachers and pupils.”

Training Schools demonstrate excellent practice across the range of teacher training activities, especially in initial teacher training and the continuing training of the whole school workforce.

They will receive extra funding through the Government’s Standards Fund, to develop and share good practice in initial teacher training and continuing staff development, as well as training mentors and undertaking research.
