Haverhill men charged with starting Chilford Hall fire
Thursday, 14th June 2012.
The barns at Chilford Hall, Linton, burned down in the early hours of yesterday, despite the efforts of 60 firefighters who managed to save the main house and the winery and study centre nearby.
The huge ancient barn had provided a backdrop to numerous wedding receptions, celebrations, functions and commercial events in recent years, including Haverhill Chamber of Commerce's Business Awards and such regional calendar highlights as the East Anglian Food Fair.
Mark Hall, 27, and Thomas Richardson, 26, both of Pipers Close, Haverhill, were due to appear at Cambridge Magistrates Court this morning charged with two counts of arson with intent to endanger life.
Chilford Hall owner Simon Alper to do whatever they can to cater for the many bookings of the barn scheduled over the summer, beginning with a wedding tomorrow, and marquees have been erected on the site.
The two main barns, one Grade II listed, the pavilion and the gallery were all lost in the fire.
