Haverhill hit by late stunner

Thursday, 18th January 2001.

HAVERHILL Rovers were left stumped by an equalising goal only 13 minutes from time.
A half volley from Paul Miles, which slipped through Cambridge City reserves goalkeeper Aaron Benstead's hands, gave Paul Goodman's side the lead after 20 minutes.
Adrian Hunt and Paul Jenkins also went close for the visitors, who had a penalty appeal turned down at Milton Road before Robin Sturgess forced an equaliser on 77 minutes.
''We played well in the first half and got the goal,'' said Goodman. ''They are a young side, but a good side, and they never give up. When they scored I thought it was a fair result. We have showed that we have come a long way. We still need to improve, but we are getting there.''
City boss Jeremy George was delighted with 17-year-old Sturgess, making only his second reserve start, and debutant Matt Rice, 16, who impressed at centre-half.
He said: "The young lads were superb and we maybe deserved to take all three points, but I've got no complaints."
