Haverhill girls in big medals haul
Thursday, 3rd February 2000.
THE future of athletics in Haverhill is certainly in good hands if the performances of Kirsty Dolby and Katie Newman are any guide, as the two eight-year-olds each won three medals at the Suffolk Sportshall Athletic Championships in Bury St Edmunds last week.
Both Kirsty and Katie broke the record for the standing long jump event, with Kirsty's 1.52 metre jump enough to give her the gold medal while Katie collected the silver with a jump of 1.39 metres.
Kirsty also won gold in the one-lap sprint event and collected the silver in the speeds bounce. Katie's success came in the hurdles event and she also won a second silver in the two-lap sprint.
Katie's mum Mandy took the two girls to the event, and was full of praise for the young athletes, "There was over 70 children competing in the various events, and they both did very well to win their medals.
"Hopefully, we will be able to take more children to next year's event, as it would be nice to see more people from outside Bury winning medals," said Mrs Newman.
Both girls are members of the Haverhill mini-olympic club which meets in Haverhill Sports Centre every Monday between 4.00pm and 5.00pm - new members are always welcome.
