Haverhill Angling Club News
By Rupert Beynon on Monday, 11th July 2011.
What a difference a location can make! The recent European Championships held on the Ugli Canal in southern Poland was blasted by the England team coach for producing the lowest ever two-day match results between 28 countries.
Only an average of 2oz per angler was produced over the two matches. Compare this with Haverhill's recent club match which was held at Home Farm, Little Walden where the top three anglers all caught over 100lbs each.
The day saw local Haverhill man Cyril Mayes get off to a flyer using large lumps of bread fished off the top which produced a constant stream of carp all day, but he could not match the eventual winner, Jason Jeggo.
After a slow start and only catching two carp in the first two hours he soon found the fish right under his feet.
Fishing dog biscuits off the top on the pole produced a final weight of 119lbs 6oz. Second, closely behind, using the same method, was Danny Porter for 116lbs, and third with 108lbs 8oz was Dave Pennycook fishing pellet close in on the pole.
Haverhill club cards and day tickets can be brought at Petcos in Haverhill, with a special £10 ticket for juniors to cover the summer school holidays.
The next match will be held on Crabtree Lake at Lawn Farm Fisheries near Cambourne on Sunday, July 24. If you wish to come along to a friendly match please call Jason Jeggo on 07962055307.
