Haverhill Angling Club news
By Rupert Beynon on Monday, 7th June 2010.
The fish health inspectorate CEFAS, along with other fishing groups, have set up a confidential crime-stoppers hot line on 0800 555111 to help stop the illegal importation of fish and the theft of expensive angling equipment.
With a 50lb carp fetching in the region of £20k it's no wonder that this has become such a lucrative business.
You may ask what is the harm in this? Apart from it being against the law these fish from the continent can carry disease which can wipe out complete fish stocks - you only need to look at the carp herpes virus to see what can happen.
On a lighter note, the latest in the Haverhill Angling Club matches took place at the weekend at Cockfield fisheries.
The increased warm weather has led to these carp spawning for the second time this year and evidence close in the shallows proved this.
Michael Potter decided to gamble and fish this area and was rewarded with a very good haul of 56lb 7oz, fishing popped-up dog biscuit on a method feeder.
Second, using a similar method with a cut-down pop-up boilie in the deeper water was Dave Spencer with a total of 32lb 1oz, and third was Dave Tobin with 24lb4oz, using pepperami on a method in the margins.
Another match run by Neil Foster, held at Haverhill Floodpark at the same time, was won by Dave Rees with 21lb14oz, second place was Dave Ratcliff with 20lb 14oz, and a close third was Ian Garner with 20lb 5oz.
The next match has been changed to Clare top lake which will be held on Sunday, June 20.
