Haverhill - An orphan for too long
Wednesday, 7th April 2004.
The Haverhill Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s first executive event, held at the Woodlands Hotel on Friday evening, was a huge success, with attendees far exceeding all expectations.
Over 50 representatives from local businesses were present to hear Richard Spring, MP, announce the winner of the recent Haverhill Chamber Logo Competition, sponsored by Barclays Bank. Students from Haverhill’s two upper schools, Castle Manor and Samuel Ward, were asked to design a logo for the new Chamber.
Entries were of an extremely high standard but eventually six were chosen, all of which can now be seen on the Haverhill Chamber website at
www.haverhillchamber.co.uk.
Overall winner was Robert Connor, a Year 12 student, from Castle Manor Upper School, with Aaron Jenner from Samuel Ward as runner-up. Robert was present at the event and received his prize from Richard Spring. (Aaron was represented by Ben Bowles, who was also one of the six finalists.) The winning Logo is very distinctive and successfully symbolises the four sectors of business associated with the Chamber –manufacturing, retail, trade and service-representatives of which were all present in the audience.
Mr Spring expressed his delight regarding the formation of the new Chamber. He went on to say that he felt that this was an important step forward for the town and symptomatic of the changes now taking place locally. He also emphasised his pleasure at observing the close relationship emerging between the business
community and local schools, which he referred to as a marriage. Members and guests listened as he outlined his hopes for Haverhill’s future, his response to recent controversy surrounding the development of the town centre and his commitment to ensuring progress occurs sooner rather than later. Using an emotive phrase, Mr
Spring described Haverhill as having been, “an orphan for far too long!”
A lively open forum followed Mr Spring’s speech, during which those present were able to voice their opinions and ask further questions.
Haverhill Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s next event, on 5th May, promises to be just as stimulating.
