Havebury takes over town's Wherry homes

Monday, 22nd November 2010.

Havebury Housing Partnership has taken on more than 70 properties in a single week – including 55 former Wherry Housing Association homes in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds.

The move represents the largest ever number of new homes Havebury has ever taken on in such a short space of time.

The affordable homes provider bought 55 former Wherry Housing Association properties in Haverhill and Bury St Edmunds and in the same week purchased six flats at Prospect Row in Bury St Edmunds which are to be modernised for letting next year.

Meanwhile, the partnership built and let two new homes at Spring Lane, also in Bury, along with 11 out of a development of 22 new properties at Norse Avenue in Stanningfield.

The latter homes, which are already occupied, meet stringent environmental and sustainable performance standards.

Havebury head of development Dennis Heath said the new developments were great news for Havebury, which has a further 6,000 properties on its books.

He added: “This is the largest ever increase in our housing stock in a single week. I would like to congratulate our teams on their hard work in securing the success of these projects.”

Amy Southerill is one of the new tenants at a two-bedroom, environmentally-friendly property in Stanningfield along with her partner Chris and six-month-old son Austin.

She said: “Because it’s so well insulated we haven’t needed to put the heating on yet, and we’ve got solar power which heats the water for showers. So it looks like the house will really help us to reduce our costs which is a big bonus.”

Last month, Havebury chief executive Karen Mayhew warned that the association’s future developments could be jeopardised by the Comprehensive Spending Review, which cut social housing budgets by £4 billion.

She said: “Many of our proposed new properties would have been subsidised through Government grants, which may not now come to fruition due to the cuts.

"In light of this, securing the properties in Bury St Edmunds, Haverhill and Stanningfield is extremely positive for us and for the tenants to whom we are now able to give a home.”
