Havebury signs up to leading LGB equality group

Wednesday, 6th April 2011.

The housing provider which owns most of Haverhill's rented homes has joined a leading equality charity.

Havebury Housing Partnership has shown its commitment to lesbian, gay and bisexual staff through a partnership with leading LGB equality charity Stonewall.

The affordable homes provider is the only housing association in Suffolk to join Stonewall’s Diversity Champions Programme, an employers’ forum for good practice around sexual orientation issues.

Havebury chief executive Karen Mayhew said: “The programme brings together top employers from across the UK, including the Army, IBM and the Chartered Institute of Housing, to promote diversity in the workplace.

"It helps businesses to develop inclusive workplace cultures, ensuring that all their staff can perform to their full potential.

“We’re very proud to be part of this programme and already ensure equal treatment for staff members who are lesbian, gay, bisexual.

"Our involvement in the programme shows we value our team and truly respect the need for equality and diversity in our working environment.”

Daniel Danso, workplace associate from Stonewall, said: “Havebury has shown it truly believes in the value of equality and diversity by joining this programme. By being the first housing association in Suffolk to work with us, it is sending a strong message to its staff and residents about LGB rights.”

Havebury is also working in partnership with the Housing Diversity Network while it has also begun a rolling scheme to complete Equality Impact Assessments, which are overseen by the Equality and Diversity Forum.

Mrs Mayhew added: “In addition, we have published an online Diversity Calendar at www.havebury.com. This lists events taking place in different communities, such as the recent LGBT History Month, Jewish Passover on April 19 and World Diversity Day in May.

“We think it’s extremely important to raise awareness of events such as these, in order for Havebury to be as wide-reaching as possible and accessible to all members of the community.”
