Havebury secures £8million funding from Government

Thursday, 14th August 2014.

Millions of pounds of Government funding have been secured to help build 234 affordable homes in St Edmundsbury by 2018.

The funding, worth £8m in total, has been awarded to Havebury Housing Partnership to build 427 affordable homes predominantly across west Suffolk.

Havebury worked in partnership with St Edmundsbury Borough Council to identify and present potential sites, largely around Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill, for Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) funding.

The borough council, which manages housing need, determined the strategy for housing supply, and Havebury, which took over the council’s housing stock in 2002 will deliver it operationally.

Designs and construction for over 130 of these will begin in the next few months. The new programme runs from 2015–2018 and will include Mitchell Avenue Garage site in Bury St Edmunds (seven homes) and the former Snooker Hall site in Chalkstone Way (21 homes) in Haverhill.

Cllr Anne Gower, St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member for housing, said: “This is an excellent start to our strengthened focus on providing the homes that underpin our local economy, and it is the shape of things to come.

"The HCA has only awarded about half its total funding and we will continue working with our registered providers partners to ensure more money comes to West Suffolk for housing.

"We are in a strong position, thanks to our agile and commercial approach, our excellent working relations and our commitment to increasing the supply of affordable homes. I look forward to future successes.”

Karen Mayhew, chief executive at Havebury Housing Partnership, said: “Havebury and St Edmundsbury share a joint endeavour in meeting local housing need.

"The delivery of more affordable homes is very good news, not just for those households waiting for a home or those facing homelessness but for the whole borough.

"The provision of decent, affordable homes is the bedrock of stable families and communities.”
