Hastings shows punching power
Thursday, 6th December 2001.
HAVERHILL Amateur Boxing Club travelled the Holiday Inn Hotel Basildon where it saw their new up-and-coming junior Darren Hastings face local boy Kieth Austin, from Chelvadon amateur boxing club.
The first round started at a high pace with both boys trying to establish their authority with a high volume of punches bring thrown. At the end of the round Austin started to tire slightly and Hastings capitalised by scoring with some straight punching.
Rounds two and three were very similar with Hastings slowly dictating the fight through his high workrate, and his composure throughout the rounds, as well as some excellent counter punching for which Austin really did not have an answer.
The bout was scored using computer scoring where it saw Hastings come out winner on a 7 –2 margin. It was a well deserved win for a very promising young boxer.
