Green light for new site

PLANS for a huge industrial and warehouse unit at Haverhill have been approved by planners despite objections from villagers at nearby Sturmer.
The plans, by Wrenbridge Ltd and 3i Property, centre on a site off Haverhill bypass and could create up to 1,000 jobs.
They include a petrol filling station, a hotel and restaurant.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council approved the plan earlier this year, but as part of the site is in Essex, it also had to gain the approval of Braintree District Council.
Braintree planners received a petition with 48 signatures, 12 letters from residents, 30 standard letters, as well as objections from Sturmer Parish Council and the Stunner Action Group to the plan. They raised concerns about extra traffic and pollution.
Jane Sullivan, area development control manager. for the council, said permission was granted subject to a legal agreement being signed by the developer to make a financial contribution towards traffic calming measures for Stunner.
However, members did not support villagers’ calls for a by-pass.
“It was raised, but it was not supported by the Essex County Highways Department. This development will not create sufficient traffic to warrant a by-pass,” Ms Sullivan said.
John Collar, who represents the Sturmer area on the council, highlighted the concerns of Helions Bumpstead residents that if the development was called Helions Park lorries might mistakenly end up in their village.
