Good conditions bring out the golfers

There was a good turnout for the Men’s IFF Challenge played sat Haverhill Golf Club on Wednesday, November 23, due to the excellent conditions for the time of year.
The competition had to be decided on count
back with the overall winner, Michael Barnham, having the better back nine to score an excellent nett 63, reducing his handicap by 2 shots to 13.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Paul Houchen 70-6-64; 2 Tim Daniels 79-12-67; 3 Matthew Farlie 80-12-68.
Division Two, 1 Michael Barnham 78-15-63; 2 David Roope 80-13-67; 3 Gordon Gibson 87-19-68.
Division Three, 1 Peter Grant 91-28-63; 2 Barry Shuter 86-22-64; 3 Ian Rose 97-26-71.
There was an even bigger field for the Men’s Medal on Sunday, November 27, despite the very windy conditions. The overall winner was Richard Norden with a nett 66, and his handicap has been cut by two shots to 17.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Dave Whiting 75-7-68; 2 Eamonn Bareham 76-6-70 on countback; 3 Matthew Farlie 82-12-70.
Division Two, 1 Richard Norden 85-19-66; 2 Glen Hughes 84-15-69; 3 Joe Davis 86-16-70 on countback.
Division Three, 1 Antony Choat 99-24-75; 2 David Chapman 100-25-75; 3 Ryan Greenwood 101-25-76.
Haverhill’s lady captain, Marian Mercer, was the overall winner of the Ladies Turkey Trot, played over two legs in October and November, with a combined score of 64pts.
The results for October were: 1 Christine Grainger 41pts, 2 Marian Mercer 36pts, 3 Sarah Field 33pts on countback. The results of the November leg were: 1 Rebecca Richards 35pts, 2 Jane Herrington 33pts on countback, 3 Sheila Playle 33pts.
The Stonham Barns Junior Players’ Championship was held on Sunday, November 27. The event was split up into four age categories and Haverhill’s Joshua Hulyer won the under eights age category with a score of 38pts.
Joshua has been very consistent and this was his fifth win in the six events he has played during 2011. In second place was eight-year-old Ethan Jones from Barnham Broom Golf Club and in third place was James Black, a seven-year-old from Ely City Golf Club.
There will be another eight events scheduled at Stonham Barns for 2012, starting in April and then monthly through to November. This latest win rounds off an excellent season for Joshua, who also played in the UK Kids Golf Final back in September, where he came fifth nationally in his age group.
The Suffolk Winter Alliance meeting was held at Hintlesham on Wednesday, November 30, supported by the biggest field of the season so far - 104 players (26 teams) which included 11 professionals.
In perfect weather conditions, on a well-presented Hintlesham course, the professional prize was won by Danny Barton of Felixstowe Golf Centre with a three under par score of 69.
Second place was shared by four professionals with a score of 74 - Tim Cooper (Newton Green), Warren Goddard (Waldringfield), Robin Mann (Southwold) and Adrian Trett (Bury Driving Range).
The Team Stableford event (two scores from four to count) was won by a mixed team of Danny Barton (Felixstowe Golf Centre), James Tyler (Felixstowe Golf Centre),Tom Evans (Felixstowe Ferry) and Miles Cowburn (Felixstowe Ferry) with a score of 89 points.
Haverhill’s Richard Brazier and his team of Sam Ward (Ufford Park), Ronnie Scott (Ufford Park) and John Wilding (Ely) finished in second place with 86pts on countback from the third place team, all from Hintlesham, Steve Gray, Trevor Hellyer, Peter Nunn and Mel Stammers.
The men’s Turkey Trot was played on Saturday, December 3, as a stableford competition. The winner overall with an excellent score of 41pts was Haverhill’s vice-president David Chapman. As a result David has had his handicap reduced by two shots.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Michael Perrett 40pts, 2 Wayne Penman 38pts on countback, 3 Andy Softley 38pts.
Division Two, 1 Mick Dalena 38pts, 2 Gary Webb 37pts on countback, 3 Luke Williams 37pts.
Division Three, 1 David Chapman 41pts, 2 Graham Cox 38pts, 3 ace Chris Powell 35pts.
On Sunday, December 4, the Men’s Medal was played. Joe Davis was the overall winner, four shots clear of his nearest rivals, with a fantastic nett 62. As a result, Joe has had his handicap cut by three shots to 13.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Andy Craig 78-12-66 on countback; 2 Jack Bligh 74-8-66; 3 Declan McComb 76-9-67.
Division Two, 1 Joe Davis 78-16-62; 2 Murray McKenzie 87-19-68 on countback; 3 Donald Simpson 84-16-68.
Division Three, 1 Spenser Lee 92-21-71 on countback; 2 Graham Hepworth 93-22-71; 3 Jim Mulley 98-23-75.
