Golfers post excellent scores in medal competition

Tuesday, 15th February 2011.

The Men’s Midweek Medal was played at Haverhill Golf Club on Wednesday, February 9, and some excellent scores were posted.

Roger Hartley won overall with a nett 62 and as a result has had his handicap reduced by four shots to 20.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Peter Garner 77-12-65; 2 Jim Walker 80-10-70; 3 Lee Chandler 82-7-75.

Division Two, 1 Jonathan Wiseman 81-17-64; 2 Chris Mellings 91-20-71; 3 Mark Firman 87-14-73.

Division Three, 1 Roger Hartley 86-24-62; 2 Keith McCallum 95-25-70; 3 Pat Mansfield 92-21-71.

The Ladies Rosebowl Final was played on Saturday, February 12, with the field comprising last year’s medal winners.

Once again Mary Sail claimed the victory with an impressive eight-shot lead over her nearest rival. Mary’s nett 72 meant that her handicap has been reduced by one shot to 16. The results were 1 Mary Sail 89-17-72; 2 Sue Carr 93-13-80; 3 Lyn Fish 106-25-81.

Haverhill’s pairing of Wayne Penman and Andrew Fish took the honours at Southwold when competing in the Suffolk Golf Alliance meeting on Sunday, February 13.

A maximum field for the nine-hole course, par 70, found conditions tricky as Penman and Fish finished with 43pts, just one shot clear of runners-up James Tyler (Felixstowe Driving Range) and Jamie Horsfield (Woodbridge) in the Fourball Better Ball competition.

Nigel Sage (Ufford Park) and partner Ricky Dzierozynski (Woodbridge) slipped into third spot on countback with 41pts with Haverhill's highest other placing of 39pts being Derek Thomas and Bob Spittle.

The individual professional event was won by Ashley Boother with a medal round of 74, three shots clear of runner-up Kevin Earp (Bury Driving Range) who posted a score of 77.

Ashley Boother also heads the season’s Order of Merit on 203pts, but is looking over his shoulder as Wayne Penman (198pts) is starting to close in. With two more qualifying rounds to come before the final round at Haverhill at the end of March, it should prove to be an exciting finale.
