Golfers continue to battle the cold weather

On Wednesday, December 14, the Men’s Midweek Medal was played at Haverhill Golf Course.
The overall winner with an excellent nett score of 67 was Mark Wells and as a result his handicap has been reduced by one shot.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Bob Spittle Jnr 76-8-68; 2 Gerry Scott 75-6-69 (lowest gross); 3 Andy Softley 83-12-71.
Division Two, 1 Mark Wells 86-19-67; 2 Gordon Gibson 90-19-71; 3 Stuart Haworth 91-20-71.
Division Three, 1 Patrick Bowes 101-24-77; 2 Ralph Herridge 104-25-79; 3 Graham Hepworth 102-22-80.
The Ladies Stableford was played on Wednesday, December 7. Winning with a score of 32pts was Sue Carr, in second place Mary Sail with 30pts and in third place Jackie Condon with 26pts.
On Saturday, December 10, another Stableford competition was played and winning with a score of 29pts was Julie Sherry, in second place Lyn Fish with 28pts and in third place Pauline Calmet with 25pts.
On Sunday, December 11, the Winter Alliance moved to Ufford. After a shotgun start, 52 members, including four professionals, played the Ufford course which had deceptively fast greens for the time of year.
Temperatures were a little low, even more so with a chilling wind. The professional prize was won by Danny Barton of Felixstowe Golf Centre with a one over par 72, two shots clear of second placed Stuart Robertson of Ufford Park.
The four ball better ball competition was won by the pairing of Kevin Earp (Bury Driving Range) and Daragh Whelan of Haverhill with 43pts. In second place were Tom Evans & Miles Cowburn with 39pts (Felixstowe Ferry) (on countback), and in third place Reg Walters & Paul Samain with 39pts (Diss & Ufford Park).
Haverhill juniors played their monthly medal on Saturday, December 17. The overall winner was junior vice-captain, Liam Merritt, with a score of 74-6-68, just one shot ahead of Michael Perrett with 76-7-69. In third place was Mitchell Davis with 87-16-71.
Haverhill’s head professional Paul Wilby hosted the ‘2011 Christmas Cracker’ which was played on Sunday, December 18. Despite the cold and wintry conditions, a field of 92 took part in the stableford pairs event.
The clear winners, with an exceptional score of 45pts were Jackie Condon and Paul Loomes. The runners-up had to be decided on countback as three other pairs shared the same score.
In second place were Dan Wilkins and Dave Pipe, in third place were Frank Gooch and Paul Bartlett and in fourth place Jim Bowser and Paul Meeks all with 42pts.
Paul Wilby gave the prize presentation afterwards and thanked all the competitors that took part, especially for braving the weather.
