Golfers battle out close contest

Tuesday, 2nd August 2011.

The men’s IFF Challenge was played on July 27, and the competition was very close across the divisions.

However David Mayers took the overall prize with a nett 64, and has had his handicap cut by one shot.

The full results were: Division One, 1 Bob Spittle 75-9-66 on countback; 2 Liam Merritt 74-8-66 (lowest gross); 3 Mark Stanton 78-10-68.

Division Two,1 David Mayers 77-13-64; 2 Simon Iron 85-20-65; 3 Matthew Farlie 81-14-67.

Division Three, 1 Daniel Bentley 86-21-65; 2 Mark Hilton 91-25-66; 3 John Paterson.

Haverhill’s Tim Daniels and David Roope narrowly dipped out of winning the Seniors Open at Ryston Park near Downham Market on Friday, July 22. They finished in second place with a stableford score of 44pts, two points behind the winners.

The juniors section competed in the D Quinney Cup on Tuesday, August 2. Some incredible scores were returned and the winner with a round of 78-20-58 was Daniel Bentley who, as a result, has had his handicap trimmed by four shots to 16.

Daniel has recently been attending Haverhill Golf Club’s Junior Academy run by head professional Paul Wilby and assistant professionals Ollie Rush and Harry Mills, who said: “These coaching sessions have really paid off for Daniel, and his swing has improved dramatically."

The runner up, also with an impressive round of 91-27-64, was Hayden Durrant, who has been cut three shots to 24.

Ellis Brown finished in third place with a great round of 78-12-66 and he has had his handicap cut by one shot to 11.

In the Stableford Competition it was Joshua Hulyer who claimed first prize with a fantastic 42pts, trimming his handicap by three shots to 33. In second place was Louis Martin with 37pts and in third place Ben Bradnam with 34pts.
